Somewhere in Banja Luka, in a tailor’s workroom that no longer exists, there are dresses on a rail.

Finished. Each one made with care for a woman who would never come to collect it. My grandmother sewed them, hung them, and then shut the door and left. She left because we had to. Because it was 1996, and Bosnia was no longer safe for us. She left her craft behind her whole working life, hanging quietly in the dark, and brought her hands and her knowledge with her instead.

I was seven years old. I didn’t understand what we were leaving. After years of playing with her fabrics and buttons and watching her draw models for her clients and then tirelessly work into all hours of the night to have them finished, she left it all behind. And when we came to Australia, I watched her the way her hands still knew things, a craft she carried with her. That knowledge didn’t require a workroom. It lived in her.

That is where Matea begins.

A part of my childhood was spent living inside uncertainty. To not know what the next day would bring. That kind of childhood does something to you it makes you acutely aware of the things that make people feel human. A beautiful thing.

In 2014, I launched Matea Designs at first, quietly. A small collection of clothing for women, designed with the kind of attention my grandmother had taught me to give. Each piece considered. Nothing wasted. Quality over volume, always.

Friday Thoughts which evolved into Fearless Female Friday.

Every Friday for nearly a decade, I have written a musing.

The kind you write to a woman you believe in, even when she has temporarily forgotten how to believe in herself. Fearless Female Friday began because I had things I needed to say, and women in my community needed to hear them. It grew into something I didn’t expect: a place where thousands of women return every week to be reminded of who they are.

Those writings drew from my own life, from loss, from hardship, from the particular kind of wisdom that only comes from having lived through something that tried to break you and didn’t. From my Eastern European heritage, which carries a different relationship to resilience than the self-help industry ever captured. From watching women I loved move through grief and joy and the daily work of simply being themselves in a world that keeps asking them to be something else.

And slowly, over time, I understood what Matea was really for.

What Matea Is

Not just a fashion brand, though we create beautiful clothing.

Matea is a space where women return to themselves. Through what they wear, what they read, what they anoint their skin with, what they write in, what they remember. Through the small daily rituals that, over time, rebuild the relationship between a woman and her own nature.

The modern world taught us that power lives in hustle. In being the same every day. In productivity and proving and the relentless performance. But women are not built for sameness, we are cyclical, intuitive, deeply feeling. Our softness is not a liability. It is the whole point.

My grandmother knew this. She encoded it into every garment she made, the attention to how fabric moves, how a woman’s body deserves to feel held rather than squeezed, how getting dressed can be an act of care rather than an obligation.

Matea carries that forward. Everything we create, our clothing, our ritual objects, our words, is made with the same intention she brought to those dresses on the rail. The ones she left behind. The ones I am, in some way, still making.
